Biography

John Qualen is best known as a Film Actor. A Canadian-born Actor who became a successful character actor, playing Norwegians, Swedes and other Scandinavians in films from the 1930s. After appearing in John Ford's 1931 film, Arrowsmith, he joined the director's stock company, appearing in the main supporting roles of Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. He was born in Vancouver, Canada, on December 8, 1899. In Howard Hawk's comedy film, His Girl Friday, he adopted a Midwestern accent. He received a scholarship to Northwestern University, which, in turn, took him to Broadway, where he played a key role as a Swedish curator. For the 1940 film version of The Grapes of Wrath, he played Muley. During his later years, Qualen became blind. He died of heart failure in 1987 in Torrance, California, and was buried in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His three daughters had survived.
