  1. Masako Owada (1992-Present) – In November 1986, he first met Masako Owada (staff working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) at a tea for Infanta Elena of Spain and was immediately captivated by her. Despite the Imperial Household Agency’s disapproval of Masako Owada, he pursued her relentlessly and proposed to her 3 times. Masako initially refused to marry the prince because it would force her to give up her promising career in diplomacy and severely restrict her independence and freedoms but after Naruhito argued that serving as Crown Princess of Japan would only be “another form of diplomacy”, she accepted the 3rd proposal by Naruhito on December 9, 1992. The Imperial Household Council formally announced the engagement on January 19, 1993, and the ceremony was held on April 12, 1993. They got married on June 9, 1993, in a traditional wedding ceremony attended by 800 invited guests, including many of Europe’s heads of state and royalty. Masako’s first pregnancy was announced in December 1999 but she miscarried. On December 1, 2001, the couple was blessed with a daughter named Aiko, Princess Toshi.
