Frank O’Farrell was a former Irish football player and coach who died on Sunday, March 6, 2022.

O’Farrell was born and reared in Cork and began his career with his hometown club before travelling to England and played for West Ham United and then Preston North End.

From July 1971 until December 1972, the Irishman was the second manager to try to succeed Sir Matt Busby at Old Trafford.

Before taking over at Manchester United, he managed Weymouth Town, Torquay United, and Leicester City.

The Irishman won 30 of his 81 games in charge and had to deal with a rebuilding process at United following their success under Busby. United led the league after losing only one of O’Farrell’s first 14 games in charge, but they couldn’t keep up and ended ninth in 1971/72.

O’Farrell was fired 18 months into the job after a humiliating 5-0 loss to Crystal Palace in December 1972, which dropped United to third-from-bottom in the Premier League.
